Bill: H.5495 / S.3119, Annual Sales Tax Holiday
Date of Vote: June 11, 2026
What Problem Was This Bill Trying to Solve?
Families and individuals across Massachusetts continue to face higher costs for everyday purchases. The annual sales tax holiday provides a temporary opportunity for residents to save money while also encouraging consumers to shop at local businesses.
The Legislature is required each year to set the dates of the sales tax holiday, which was made a permanent program through a 2018 law.
What Does the Bill Do?
Establishes Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9, 2026, as Massachusetts’ annual sales tax holiday weekend.
Suspends the state’s 6.25% sales tax on most retail purchases priced under $2,500.
Provides an opportunity for Massachusetts residents to save money on eligible purchases.
Encourages economic activity at local retailers and small businesses throughout the Commonwealth.
How I Voted
I voted YES.
Why I Voted This Way
The cost of everyday goods and services continues to be a concern for many Massachusetts families. While a sales tax holiday is temporary, it provides a meaningful opportunity for residents to keep more of their own money when making larger purchases.
I also believe that supporting local businesses is an important part of maintaining strong communities. Increased consumer activity during the sales tax holiday helps drive customers to retailers, including many small businesses that serve as important employers and community partners.
I supported this legislation because it provides direct, immediate savings for residents while encouraging economic activity across Massachusetts.
