Protecting Massachusetts Residents’ Personal Data in a Digital World

Bill: Massachusetts Consumer Data Privacy Act

Date of Vote: June 4, 2026

What Problem Was This Bill Trying to Solve?

Technology has become part of nearly every aspect of daily life, and companies increasingly collect, use, and share personal information about consumers. While data-driven services provide many benefits, residents often have limited understanding or control over how their personal information is collected and used.

This legislation establishes stronger consumer privacy protections by giving Massachusetts residents more control over their personal data, increasing transparency, and holding companies accountable for how they handle sensitive information.

What Does the Bill Do?

  • Gives Massachusetts residents greater control over their personal information.

  • Provides consumers with the right to access, correct, and delete certain personal data.

  • Allows consumers to opt out of certain uses of their information, including targeted advertising.

  • Requires companies to limit data collection to information that is reasonably necessary for the service being provided.

  • Requires additional protections for sensitive information, including health data, biometric information, and precise location data.

  • Prohibits the sale of precise geolocation data.

  • Establishes stronger privacy protections for children and minors under age 18.

  • Provides enforcement authority to the Attorney General and allows consumers to seek accountability for certain violations.

How I Voted

I voted YES.

Why I Voted This Way

Personal information has become one of the most valuable resources in our modern economy, but individuals should have a meaningful say in how their information is collected, used, and shared.

As an attorney and legislator, I believe that strong laws should protect people while allowing innovation and technology to continue improving our lives. Clear consumer privacy standards help establish trust between residents and the companies that provide digital services.

This legislation provides important protections for sensitive information, particularly for children and for data that could be misused to harm or exploit individuals. At the same time, it creates clear expectations for businesses operating in Massachusetts.

I supported this legislation because residents deserve greater control over their own personal information. In an increasingly digital world, protecting privacy is an essential part of protecting individual rights and maintaining public trust.
